As the seasons change and cooler temperatures creep in, there's nothing more inviting than a home that radiates warmth and cosiness. Whether it’s a soft throw blanket, plush cushions, or a textured rug, textiles can instantly transform a room, adding both visual interest and a sense of comfort. Here are four simple steps to help you layer textiles and bring warmth into your home.
A Good Foundation
Let’s first look at the larger textile pieces within a home. An area rug is a great option to add to a space to begin building a cosy atmosphere. Rugs make the perfect addition to any room but especially living areas and bedrooms where comfort is key. The scale of your rug should be large enough to sit under the main feature, whether that’s your sofa or bed so that the rug can ground the room and set the tone for layering.
If you already have a rug, you could always consider adding an additional, smaller rug to bring in another texture, colour or pattern to the space.
Pile on the Pillows
No space says “cosy” quite like one filled with plush pillows. When choosing cushions for your space, experiment with different shapes and sizes to create a cushion combination pleasing to the eye. Cushions don’t just come in all shapes and sizes, but different textures too. Velvet, boucle or even a knitted cushion are great textile options to add to a space that exudes warmth and comfort.
With so many different colours to work with, you can swap and change your cushions to bring in the seasonal colours. Autumn and winter is the perfect opportunity to bring in deeper and richer colours such as burgundy, forest green and brown.
Add Throw Blankets
Possibly the easiest way to layer up your home for the season is to add throw blankets. These can be draped over the back of the sofa, folded across an armchair or even placed in a rattan basket ready for people to use. Relaxed layering is always a hit in the autumn and winter months. Draping one or more throw blankets can help you achieve the effortless look.
In terms of fabric, opt for those that look and feel luxurious such as a chunky knit, faux fur or cashmere.
A bedroom is a great place to experiment with different fabrics. Opt for a plush bedspread layered with a draped cashmere or woollen throw to create contrast and warmth.
Focus on Window Treatments
Sometimes you don’t have to choose style over practicality. Not only do window treatments like curtains add softness to a room, but also insulation for the colder months. Layer up your curtains with blinds to achieve functionality and style. This will also give you the opportunity to mix different fabric textures such as cotton, velvet and boucle and layer them together.
Opt for longer curtains which reach or pool the floor to give a room a luxurious and “hotel-like” feel. You could also place the curtain rail as high as possible and cover the whole wall to make a dynamic impact and give the illusion of higher ceilings.
