The Platform Edit is back! We’ve teamed up with our interior design partners, Edward Thomas Interiors for a new series on how to use colour in your new home. Our Sales & Marketing teams have submitted their favourite colours and over the coming months, Edward Thomas Interiors will share their design hints and styling tips. First up, it’s Vikki Warrilow, Sales Consultant for Platform who has chosen the colour blue.
What interior design styles is blue a good base colour for?
Blue is undoubtedly one of the most versatile colours and offers an excellent starting point for those new to interior design. First up is navy. This classic shade is timeless and gives a sleek, elegant appearance to any room. Navy is known to evoke feelings of stability and trust, and is widely used to create an upscale, luxury look.
For a more rustic, country style, opt for a cornflower or pastel blue. These lighter shades are known to be calming and tranquil, and are perfect for making smaller spaces seem brighter.
There’s also a range of smoky, inky blues that border the indigo or grey palette. These are really effective for creating eye-catching features, such as painted panels, or for more masculine décor.
Not forgetting coastal blue which can add a much-needed pop of colour to designs based around the waterfront or seaside.
What colours can be paired with blue?
If you want to create a bold interior, perhaps following the maximalist trend, then an orange, mustard or tobacco contrasts well with the darker shades of the blue family. If you’ve opted for a more natural aesthetic, such as country or coastal chic, then add either ivory or cream, or earthy tones such as sand, taupe, caramel or stone.
Blues also pair well with metallics, think gold, copper, chrome, or natural materials such as wood.
How can I use blue in different rooms?
In kitchens one of the biggest trends recently has been navy cabinetry. This is typically mixed with gold or copper handles, and together makes a significant impact. If you’re not feeling this brave, incorporate shades of blue as an accent or on any fabrics such as cushions, throws, seating or window dressings.
In bedrooms, you could opt for a blue-based wallpaper or panelling to make a statement behind the bed, add blue bedroom furniture to contrast lighter wallcoverings, or even paint the ceiling to mimic a cloudy day or the night sky. This looks amazing in children’s bedrooms!
